Because in a polarised world, culture unites us and brings us together, culture is how we exchange ideas, culture ignites citizens’ hearts and fuels their minds, culture represents what we want for the future of our societies. Without culture, the very future of Europe is under threat. Culture is not only a part of the European project: it is its beating heart. But culture hardly features in discussions on the future of our continent. That is why we call for a Cultural Deal for Europe: for culture to be included in the EU’s funding programmes, sustainable development strategies, relations with the rest of the world, vision for our future We have created a union of states and institutions. Our founders created the European Cultural Foundation in 1954 as they envisioned a united Europe where citizens feel proudly European, a place where they can live, express themselves, work and dream freely, in diversity and harmony. Ever since the ECF promotes a European sentiment through developing and supporting cultural initiatives that let us share, experience and imagine Europe. We believe our mission is as urgent now as it was back then.
The Europe Challenge is an annual programme that brings together teams from libraries and communities across Europe to address social isolation, inequality, disinformation, climate crises and other local challenges by developing, sharing and implementing creative solutions with support from the European Cultural Foundation and its partners. The initiative is a unique growing network of European libraries that work together to enhance democratic participation and social and environmental well-being through citizen-led local change.
This is a call to the European Union to place culture at the heart of its political vision and ambition for years to come. The proposed Cultural Deal for Europe can help to mainstream culture in its key policies.
